Home//In The News//Yoav Niv Featured: Ottawa Offers To Repatriate Children

Yoav Niv has been working as a co-ordination and logistics on a case where several Canadian women and children have spent years stuck in a Syrian detention camp.

Article Summary

Ottawa has offered to repatriate Canadian children held in detention camps in northeast Syria, but the foreign mothers of these children are not being allowed to come to Canada due to their non-citizenship status. The children are held in a Kurdish-run camp with suspected ties to the Islamic State while their husbands are in prisons in Syria or the US or are dead. Last month, the federal government agreed to repatriate six Canadian women and 13 children who spent years detained in these camps, but a federal court justice ruled the government had also to repatriate four Canadian men. Other Canadians are still stuck there, including children, who were not part of the initial court application. Foreign mothers hope to be on the same flight as the Canadians the government has agreed to repatriate. Global Affairs Canada has not answered questions about separating mothers from their children.
