The Calgary Herald has written about a recent case win for Calgary lawyer Yoav Niv.
The Story in brief
A Medicine Hat man who paid for sex with three underage girls he met through social media won’t face a criminal conviction. Instead, Simarjeet Bhathal, 26, agreed to enter into a 12-month peace bond in which he must comply with conditions that include counselling for sex offending and having no contact with children under 16. The incidents occurred between April 29, 2017, and Jan. 29, 2021. Two of the girls would have been 15 years old at the end of that time period, while a third, the first to be paid for sex by Bhathal, would have been 17. Despite the girls’ ages, the prosecutor said Bhathal wasn’t aware they were under 16 and unable to consent to the sexual activity. The peace bond will allow Bhathal to get counselling to prevent similar incidents in the future.
