Yoav Niv

I am a lawyer operating in Calgary, representing clients on criminal, quasi-criminal, and regulatory charges at both the trial and appeal level.

My criminal defence practice operates under the philosophy that all individuals are presumed innocent and have the right to a dedicated defence and a fair trial. I also assist individuals and institutional clients in the areas of civil litigation, insurance claims, and environmental/health regulation violations.

I immigrated to Canada from the Middle East in 1987. As an immigrant I embraced Canada’s multicultural society. Previously, I was a successful entrepreneur in the commercial sanitation industry and served in the military. These experiences provided me with the discipline, work ethic, resourcefulness that I employ every day as a lawyer.

I operate my practice throughout Alberta and Ontario, representing clients on civil matters and criminal, quasi-criminal, and regulatory charges at both the trial and appeal level.

I obtained a Bachelor of Arts from Simon Fraser University in British Columbia with distinction, and completed my law degree in Ontario at the University of Ottawa. I graduated on the dean’s honour list.

I articled with one of Canada’s most prominent criminal defence lawyers.

Throughout law school and during my articles of clerkship, I logged over 7000 hours working with Canada’s top criminal defence teams in Toronto, Calgary, and Ottawa. I assisted the University of Ottawa’s Innocence Project and reviewed wrongful conviction claims.

I have experience defending a wide range of offences at all levels of court in Alberta and Ontario including sexual assault, white collar crime, narcotics, firearms, terrorism, internet crime, and homicide. My criminal defence practice includes defence of complex cases ranging from multiple complainant sexual assault/child exploitation prosecutions, police corruption, wiretaps, international search and seizure, as well as large scale drug importation.

I also represent both individual and institutional clients in civil and regulatory matters. I am often called upon to assist senior counsel in file review and preparation, questionings, and trial preparation in the area of insurance claims, personal injury, and regulatory offences.

I am certified as a Fraud Examiner by the world’s largest anti-fraud organization and premier provider of anti-fraud training and education. I have assisted in the instruction of the University of Calgary Law Faculty’s Advocacy Course (Civil and Criminal Sections) as well as the Canadian Centre for Professional Legal Education Program (the Alberta bar admission course).
