In August, a shooting occurred at the Calgary home of Talal Fouani and his wife, Nakita Baron. Baron was killed in the shooting, while Fouani survived. It was later discovered that Fouani was out on bail and awaiting trial on organized crime charges at the time of the shooting. These charges, which also included money laundering, were filed against Fouani and his siblings following a drug bust involving Mexican cartels and involving $55 million. Fouani’s company, Fouani Equity Funds Ltd., was also charged with laundering money for an organized crime group. A week after the shooting, a man with a criminal record was arrested and charged with first-degree murder and attempted murder in connection to the incident.
